So, I might as well start reviewing some films before I head to Cannes, and Adrift is perfect since the director, Bui Thac Chuyen is no stranger to the festival.
He claimed to not understand completely what his film is about, and was generally very vague about his passion for the themes. However, I think the anxiety, its merging with desire, was palpable throughout the film. He said that it is this ungraspable feeling that is what Adrift is about. In fact, the director only spoke of the evanescent gestures surrounding the theme, like the dissonant music, as if they were the central aspects of it. It's interesting, generations of secretive longing, repression for the sake of responsibility. A woman yearning to feel her full body, yet fearfully withdrawing from the closest encounter with this intimacy. Running away from your own desires.
